All That Jazz Discography Online
March 28, 2008

The Jazz Discography, a database long available in CD-ROM, now has a web-based version. Both provide information on “175,000 jazz recording sessions from 1896 to today,” including listings on “35,214 band leaders, 182,987 recording sessions, 1,040,235 musician entries, [and] 1,088,843 tune entries” at the time of this writing. Going beyond the content and features of the CD-ROM, the online edition offers a “New/Updated” listing of all changes to the database that can be searched for specific periods of time. It also offers a cataloging system that lets users catalog their record collections and then use search and sort features to access the records.

The product is actually available in three formats: print, CD-ROM, and online. Online pricing sounds especially reasonable, with an annual subscription for libraries ranging from $250 to $930, depending upon the number of simultaneous users, with or without remote access, and how you order (you get a discount for ordering online).

If you want definitive information about jazz recordings (including the names of sidemen and their instruments!), this file is for you and your library. For more information, please get in touch directly with Tom Lord at lord@lordisco.com.

More as it happens,

Cheryl

In addition to "New/Reissues" and Cataloging, TJD Online has a Record Label Index and Search. These 3 features are available only on The Jazz Discography Online.
